PM MAJALIWA DIRECTS CRACKDOWN ON IDLE MINING COMPANIES, THREATENS REPOSSESSION OF SITES
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has directed the Ministry of Minerals to launch an immediate follow-up and take action against mining companies that have held exploration areas for years without commencing development, specifically calling out three dormant firms operating in the Ruangwa District.
Majaliwa named Nachu, Uranex, and Paco Gems Ltd, demanding that they clarify the future of the extensive areas they have occupied. He warned that if development does not begin, those lands will be repossessed and returned to the people.
The Prime Minister issued the stern directive on Tuesday during his visit to Huaer International Limited, a rapidly developing mining company located in Ng’au village, Ruangwa District, Lindi Region.
“Paco Gems has been dormant since 2009. We also visited Uranex, which compensated residents back in 2012, yet no development has taken place. Nachu even signed a contract in front of the President of the United Republic, but since then, they have disappeared without any update,” said the Prime Minister, expressing clear frustration.
Praise for New Investment
In contrast, Majaliwa praised Huaer International Limited for moving swiftly to begin its investment project immediately after receiving all necessary approvals.
“Your company began inspections in 2024, obtained results and permits within the same year, and has already started construction. This deserves commendation and should serve as a model for other companies,” he added, holding up Huaer as an example of serious commitment.
The Prime Minister further noted that Huaer International’s ongoing construction project is a direct implementation of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision of empowering Tanzanians through investment and job creation.
“This company is setting the pace. Once construction is complete, it will provide employment opportunities for Tanzanians — especially those from Ruangwa,” Majaliwa emphasized.
He concluded by urging Tanzanian youth employed by the company to work diligently, with professionalism, discipline, and integrity, stating, “We must prove to investors that we are capable, reliable, and ready to work.”
