TANZANIA RAMPS UP FIGHT AGAINST MINERAL SMUGGLING

Tanzania is intensifying its fight against mineral smuggling, with the Ministry of Minerals spearheading a high-level strategy meeting to seal loopholes and strengthen enforcement. The move comes as the government seeks to protect valuable mineral resources and boost revenue for sustainable development.

Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Minerals, Msafiri Mbibo, chaired the meeting on October 7, bringing together senior officials from key government bodies including the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mining Commission, Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (TAKUKURU), and Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA).

Addressing the gathering, Mbibo emphasized that the fight against smuggling is not only a legal matter but a moral duty for all Tanzanians.

“Mineral smuggling is a grave threat to our economy and national security. We must close all gaps that allow this illegal trade to thrive,” Mbibo said.

He warned that smuggling has caused significant revenue losses and called for urgent collaboration across all levels of government.

“Minerals are a cornerstone of Tanzania’s development. Losing revenue due to illicit trade undermines progress. Every Tanzanian must be part of this fight,” he added.

Mbibo outlined plans for a robust mineral control system that would monitor every step of the supply chain — from extraction sites to inspection points, airports, ports, and border crossings.

He proposed the creation of specialized national task forces to conduct investigations, enforcement, and protection of mineral resources, with a focus on high-risk zones.

“Investing in advanced detection technologies — especially for precious stones — is critical. This will enable faster and more accurate identification, closing gaps exploited by smugglers,” Mbibo said.

The meeting also underscored the importance of continuous training for inspection officers to sharpen their skills in identifying mineral types, detecting illicit transport methods, and using modern enforcement tools.

The session concluded with a unanimous commitment to draft a comprehensive action plan that ensures long-term and effective control of mineral smuggling in Tanzania.

“Protecting our mineral wealth is protecting our nation’s future. This fight requires unity and determination,” Mbibo concluded.
