TANZANIA LAUNCHES CONSTRUCTION OF MAHENGE’S GIANT KINYWE GRAPHITE MINE
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Mavunde described the launch as a major milestone in advancing Tanzania’s strategic mining agenda, following directives by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to accelerate the implementation of key national projects.
“This project is not merely about resource extraction — it is a powerful engine for development that will drive industrial growth, trade, employment, and community welfare across Mahenge,” said Minister Mavunde.
According to the Minister, the Mahenge project represents an investment valued at USD 510 million (equivalent to over TZS 1.3 trillion) and is expected to create over 400 jobs during construction and more than 900 permanent jobs once operations begin. Additionally, an estimated 4,500 indirect employment opportunities will be generated through the value chain, including suppliers, farmers, traders, and service providers.
Minister Mavunde further emphasized that the government stands to earn over USD 3.2 billion (approximately TZS 7 trillion) over the life of the mine through taxes, royalties, dividends, and mineral levies.

Highlighting the global importance of graphite, he stated that the mineral is among the key components in the manufacturing of electric vehicle batteries, electronic devices, and solar panels — positioning Tanzania as a pivotal player in the future of green energy technologies.
